Performing Arts at Del Oro High School
The following are course descriptions for the Performing arts classes offered at Del Oro High school. We are proud to offer a diverse course offering taught by experienced teachers with award-winning programs. DelOro students have the opportunity to study music (instrumental and vocal), dance, and theater from novice to advanced levels.
Marching Band
The Del Oro Golden Eagle Marching Band is a participation-based class involving performances at football games, local parades, community events, and state-wide competitions. Students will achieve an advanced level of performance skills on their instruments. Individual instrumental technique growth, group dynamics and introduction to leadership skills will be emphasized. The Color Guard is a component of the band that studies visual performance skills and does not require instrumental music experience. May be repeated for credit. Jazz Band
Students must have a "B" grade level music reading skills. This class studies various jazz styles and performance practices. Students will be expected to participate in performances throughout the term. Please see the director prior to the spring term for a rehearsal schedule. This class may be repeated for credit. Winter Guard
Students learn dance, movement, and equipment skills in preparation for outside performances. Rehearsal hours will be scheduled outside of the normal class time (students will be given advance notice). In addition, students will develop the necessary skills to effectively participate in the fall Golden Eagle Marching Band. Students receive and practice materials to prepare them for success in the fall class. Advanced Drama
Drama pursues comprehensive standards-based theatre arts training to develop students so they will be able to perform successfully in a career in theatre/film arts. The program builds upon the acting
skills developed in Drama I, introduces direction and staging, and provides a foundation in theatre history. Acting skills developed will include relaxation exercises, improvisation, display of emotional tone and nuance, and character development. Students will learn how to create prompt books and write stage cues, and will work on a major school production, Written analyses of plays, including attending live productions, are an integral part of the course. Dance Choreography ll & III
Dance 2 is an intermediate level course, 2nd course in the Performing Arts CTE Dance Pathway, for students with at least one or more years of formal dance training and/or successful completion of the Dance 1 course offered at Del Oro. Its purpose is to increase one’s body awareness, technique and strength training while demonstrating dance movement. Students will also create more original works of choreography, both individually and in collaboration with peers. This course will focus on jazz, modern, ballet, and hip hop technique and choreography, while continuing to explore historical context and evolution of these styles of dance. They are required to perform in the end of term public performance in order to receive an A for the course. After school rehearsal is required, in addition to the show(s). Students will also be required to attend a dance performance outside of school and write a review on the experience. Extra optional performance opportunities may be offered. Dance history is addressed during new units and often touched on during other styles. Students will use shoes from dance 1 and be required to wear proper dance attire (leggings, or tights and spandex, black shirt, hair back). Welcome back to DO Dance!! | Band Theory This is a mandatory class for all 9th grade Del Oro Band students. Students participating in Concert Band only, must enroll in this class understanding that it is held in the fall. This course is designed to increase student knowledge in music theory and performance technique. Information to be covered will include basic music theory, musical styles, performance practices, and music history. No previous experience necessary. Advanced Concert Band As an augmentation to the Concert Band class. This option is open to juniors and seniors who meet the requirements and have previous permission from the director. This class requires extra time and effort. Leadership development, involvement in band council, band manager, and section leaders all fulfill this time requirement. Guitar Open to all students interested in the development of the guitar. This class will explore the various playing styles and basic music theory through practical application. All students must provide their own acoustic guitar. No previous guitar playing experience necessary. Repeatable by permission from instructor. Technical Theater l, ll, lll Technical Theater is geared towards learning the basics of sound, lighting, set construction, running crew, and show operation. The goal of this course is for student to know how to work in a professional level production. Technical Theater 2 focuses on design of sound, lighting, set, and costuming, and on stage management, and promotion. The goal of this course is for the students to know how to manage and design for a professional level show/theater. Technical Theater 3 advances on this learning, and teaches students leadership positions. Technical Theater is open to all students. Technical Theater 2 requires instructor approval and a grade of “C” or better in Technical Theater. To be enrolled in Technical Theater 3, students must apply and interview for leadership positions. Participants in these classes are members in the drama club, The Company. Dance Choreography l Dance 1, is the first required class in Performing Arts CTE Dance Pathway at Del Oro. It will grow the brand new dancer technically and personally (builds confidence, as well as give opportunity for more experienced dancers to assist/choreograph/mentor peers while also continuing to grow and be pushed technically and learn new styles. This course will emphasize jazz dance, with units in hip hop, ballet, contemporary, African and more. Students will learn fundamentals of choreography, and by the end of the term, will dance and contribute to the choreography of more than one 2-3 minute dance. Students will be required to perform in the end of term public performance in order to receive an A in the course. One after school rehearsal will be required, in addition to the shows on campus and weekend/evenings. Students will also be required to attend a dance performance outside of school and write a review on the experience. Dance history will be addressed at the beginning of each unit. Professionalism (i.e. dressing out, hair back, on time, positive attitude) will make up a large percentage of the grade. Dance students will need appropriate dance shoes for each dance style, and P.E./Dance clothing every day. This is a great opportunity to meet new friends, improve your physical fitness, try something new, and have a physical/emotional outlet during the school day! Welcome to DO Dance! Advanced Concert Band As an augmentation to the Concert Band class. This option is open to juniors and seniors who meet the requirements and have previous permission from the director. This class requires extra time and effort. Leadership development, involvement in band council, band manager, and section leaders all fulfill this time requirement. | Concert Band The Del Oro Golden Eagle Concert Band is an instrumental performance ensemble that focuses on instrumental technique, musicianship, music reading skills, and performance considerations. Student leadership skills are also stressed. Students will explore a variety of increasingly complex literature as the term progresses. The course is participation based involving several concert performances during the term as well as participation in community events and festivals. May be repeated for credit. Advanced Marching Band As a augmentation to the Marching Band class, this option is open to Junior and Seniors who meet the requirements and have previous permission from the director. This class requires extra time and effort. Leadership development, involvement in band council, band managers, and section leaders all fulfill this time requirement. Percussion The purpose of this class is to learn fundamental percussion performance skills in preparation for outside performances. There will be rehearsal hours scheduled outside of the normal class time (students will be given advance notice). In addition, students will develop the necessary skills to effectively participate in the fall Golden Eagle Marching Band. They will receive and practice the materials to prepare them for success in the fall class. Musical Theater A production-oriented class that will help develop a musical theatre production for public performance in late fall. The aesthetic values and experiences referred to in Drama 1 are pursued. The class will introduce students to the varieties and forms of songs common in musical theatre, cover musical theatre history, and teach students how to prepare audition numbers. Drama l This introductory course includes basic acting skills, as well as voice and body control. Students learn to create and evaluate short dramatic scenes, including costuming, directing, staging and simple scenery. Students will be required to perform several memorized monologues in front of the class, participate in group activities including pantomime, improvisation, role-playing, and will work on major school productions. Written analysis of plays, including attending live productions are an integral part of the course. Significant developments in theatre history will be explored through research, presentations and scene work. Dance Team Dancers must audition or be invited by dance director. Dancers must be intermediate-advanced level jazz, and also be comfortable with hip hop, pom, military, and be a stellar performer! Dance team members must enroll in dance team class as well as one or more other DO dance class during the year. Team members must also be available for extra-curricular activities, practices and performances throughout the year at various sporting events, rallies, performances. The dance team will represent Del Oro High Dance at its best. Dance team may be repeated for credit. |
