Message, purpose, audience, and voice — recognizing these four elements will help you understand, analyze, and evaluate an author's rhetoric, or persuasive, techniques.  Every author has an argument.  It's vital that an author consider these elements when constructing an argument, and a reader consider them when confronted with an argument.
