Mrs. Somers
"It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it."  - Oscar Wilde

Writing Begins with Reading ...
Welcome, Seniors, to Somers' English class pages. As you enter my class, you should probably know that I begin each term with the end in mind.  In other words, from the first day I meet you, my mind will be focused on Saturday, June 1, 2019, when I will have the pleasure of watching you walk past me, proud and excited in your black graduation robes.  My job is to provide all the literacy tools and guidance to make sure you will be ready for what's next, be it college or career; your job is to be willing to think, learn, and challenge yourself individually.

As you get to know me better, you will learn that I am a teacher who cares a great deal about both my students and the subject of English.  I love my job! Also, whether you are enrolled in AP Literature or ERWC this term, you will find that academic writing begins with academic reading: an active and participatory process. And when we write for academic purposes, we are always joining a conversation already in progress.

About Mrs. Somers ...
  • This is my 28th year teaching English at Del Oro.
  • I grew up in San Diego where my father was a commercial tuna fisherman.
  • My grandparents (both sets) were immigrants. I'm half Irish and half Sicilian, but I never inherited a bad temper from either side.
  • I married my high school sweetheart (and best friend) at 19, and we just celebrated our 41st anniversary.
  • My husband is a forester and works for U.C. Berkeley at their research forest.
  • Our three kids are all D.O. grads, and two are high school teachers and one owns the Northfork Deli in Auburn.
  • We have 7 little grandchildren. Being their Grandma is a pretty awesome gig.
  • We have an Irish setter named Liam and a black cat named Olive.
  • I love hiking, running, literature, music, movies, and most of all, family.
  • I am the English Department Chair, and I love working with my amazing colleagues.
