Lyrics

You look so defeated lying there in your new twin size bed
With a single pillow underneath your single head
I guess you decided that that old queen was more space than you would need
Now it's in the alley behind your apartment with a sign that says it's free

And I hope you have more luck with this than me

You used to think that someone would come along
And lay beside you in a space that they belong
But the other side of the mattress and box springs stayed like new
What's the point of holding onto what never gets used?

Other than a sick desire for self-abuse

And I try not to worry, but you've got me terrified
It's like your some kind of hurry to say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye

You look so defeated lying there in your new twin size bed
You look so defeated lying there in your new twin size bed

Commentary Practice

TS: In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell the protagonist, Rainsford, displays many acts of courage throughout his journey.

LI: Early in the story Rainsford falls off his yacht into the dark waters of the Caribbean Sea.

IQ: Panic could have engulfed him, but instead “a certain coolheadedness had come to him; it was not the first time he had been in a tight place” (Connell 4).

Read all 4 sets of commentary.  Rank them from strongest commentary to weakest.  You must be able to defend your rankings.

CM #1: Rainsford remains calm while facing a difficult and dangerous situation. His courage shows through; therefore, it helps him survive by showing no fear and allowing him to swim to a nearby island.

CM#2: Rainsford had been in other tight spots before, so he knew what to do.  He started swimming toward the sound of the gunshots and eventually reached Ship-Trap Island.

CM#3: Rainsford found himself in a dangerous situation; he was alone in the dangerous waters of the sea.  He could panic, but he chose not to; instead, he courageously started swimming.

CM#4: Rainsford’s experience in difficult situations enabled him to resist the panic that threatened to entrap him.  His ability to stay calm, and conquer the fear of the dark waters, demonstrates the courage which enables him to survive the first of many ordeals.

 Performed by Coldcut

Words & Music by Joe South

If I could be you, if you could be me
For just one hour, if we could find a way
To get inside each other's mind
If you could see you through my eyes
Instead your own ego I believe you'd be
I believe you'd be surprised to see
That you've been blind

Walk a mile in my shoes
just walk a mile in my shoes
Before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Then walk a mile in my shoes

Now if we spend the day
Throwin' stones at one another
'Cause I don't think, 'cause I don't think
Or wear my hair the same way you do
Well, I may be common people
But I'm your brother
And when you strike out
You're tryin' to hurt me
It's hurtin' you, Lord HAVE mercy

Walk a mile in my shoes
just walk a mile in my shoes
Before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Then walk a mile in my shoes

Now there are people on reservations
And out in the ghetto
And brother there, but, for the grace of God
Go you and I,
If I only had wings of a little angel
Don't you know, I'd fly
To the top of a mountain
And then I'd cry, cry, cry

By Theodore Reothke

The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death:
Such waltzing was not easy.

We romped until the pans
Slid from the kitchen shelf;
My mother's countenance
Could not unfrown itself.

The hand that held my wrist
Was battered on one knuckle;
At every step you missed
My right ear scraped a buckle.

You beat time on my head
With a palm caked hard by dirt,
Then waltzed me off to bed
Still clinging to your shirt.
